Carl William Gusse

Carl William Gusse, age 68, passed away on April 9, 2023, escaping his diseased body and mind to take his place in heaven where there is no more illness, pain, or suffering. Carl was born September 17, 1954, to the late Donald W. and Mona Gusse. He, his parents, and seven siblings, lived in Ohio, Maryland, California, Ohio, Colorado, and Michigan. Carl is the beloved brother of the late Greg Gusse, the late Carol Bodley, Donald E. Gusse, Walter Gusse, the late Kathy Lawrence, Barbara Johnson, and Susan Poulson. He is survived by his influential and devoted uncle and aunt Carlos and Patricia Mastropaolo - as well as his wife, children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Upon high school graduation, Carl moved to Michigan. He attended Macomb Community College where he met his treasured wife of forty-six years, Carol Lynn Gusse (Bary). They made a loving home in Warren, Michigan, where they raised their three children, Tina (the late Paul) Fuelling, Matthew Gusse, and Crystalyn (Brian) Van Hevel. He was an understanding father who successfully coupled high expectations with unconditional love. His love was quiet, but unquestionable, his support reliable, and his pride undeniable. Carl was a down-on-the-floor playing Papa to his four grandkids Ashlyn, Kayden, Jayce, and Lukas - the true pride of his life. He watched them grow with awe-filled love, cherishing his time with them. 

Carl was a bright man, skilled in numbers and up for conversation surrounding any issue. Carl graduated from Oakland University and made a career as a field officer and eventual manager of the IRS, from which he took early medical retirement. Family, friends, neighbors, and mere acquaintances recall Carl as a kind and friendly man, always up for conversation. He was a gentle and humble spirit, content with simple pastimes such as card playing and just watching television. He had an easy, memorable laugh and eyes through which love shone.

Husband, dad, papa, brother, nephew, uncle, neighbor, co-worker, boss, friend—Carl will be missed and remembered by many. Till we meet again…

There will be a service on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 4:00 with visitation at 3:00, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Macomb, Michigan, to remember and celebrate Carl’s life.
