Charles Andrew Zarkis Sr., affectionately known as Chuck, passed away on January 19, 2024. After an unexpected stomach cancer diagnosis, his remaining months were spent surrounded by loving family in his St. Clair Shores home of 35 years.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Doris Zarkis, his children, Karen Zarkis, Chuck (Sandy) Zarkis and Michael Zarkis. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kevin (Chloe), Jeremy and Jamie, along with his great grandson, James. He is further survived by his brother, William Zarkis. Chuck was predeceased by his Mother and Stepfather, Julia and Clare Connolly, along with his Aunt Dorothy Gauthier and his sister-in-law, Nancy Zarkis.
Chuck was the best husband, father, father-in-law "buddy", grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother, nephew and friend anyone could ask for. Married for 63 years, he was Doris' Cutiepie since the days of his Notre Dame High School dances. Made apparent through his actions every single day, he loved his family unconditionally and was a faithful follower of Christ. A family-forward father, his wife and children were his top priority. He showcased the same endless love towards his grandchildren and great grandchild. Always a calming presence to be around, he was a patient, kind-hearted and stoic man with a sharp sense of wit and humor.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, racing, camping, fishing and hunting. Lovingly coined "the man in the yellow boat," he effortlessly left a lasting impression on those he met. He happily offered his love, time and knowledge to those around him; friend and stranger alike. He was a mentor and dependable hero to many.
He served on the Detroit Police force for 25 years and worked for Children's Hospital. He put his life on the line numerous times to selflessly save multiple lives, both on and off the clock — he never hesitated to assist those in need.
Chuck's memory will live on in the roar of the racetrack, the sweet scent of sawdust, and the gentle ripples cast out by an early morning fishing line. Those that knew him are left with warmer hearts, wider smiles and an enduring sense of admiration.
