Christopher Cholewa, 49, of Warren, Michigan passed away tragically on October 22nd, 2026, due to a freak accident at his long-time place of work, Basic Metals. He was with his co-workers at the time of the accident – a crew made up of friends, family, and friends he had for so long they might as well have been family.
With a friendly demeanor and an unavoidable smile, Chris found himself a first date on the Big Lots sales floor followed by 22 years of marriage. An avid dog lover, he held his fur babies close to his heart and showered them daily with every ounce of love and care he had. His wife, his family, and his dogs – quite possibly the only things in life he treasured more than a fresh bottle of Heinz Ketchup. He never met a chicken parm he couldn’t finish. He never said no to lending a helping hand to anyone who’d ask, and he became the person to turn to for so many family members during times of need.
A lifelong sports fan, Christopher was happiest in the Fall cheering on Saturdays for the Maize and Blue and the Honolulu Blue on Sundays. A talented baseball player as a youngster, Chris continued that love for the game being an avid Tigers fan his entire life. Chris and his wife spent many years involved in friendly bowling leagues, and he himself was a believer in the fact that “bowling a 299 is basically just as difficult as 300”.
Chris was the front-facing figure of a community-based recycling yard situated in the heart of Mount Clemens, Michigan for more than 15 years. A beloved pillar of the local community, he was well-known for being as honest as he was hard-working. Never one to judge, he was happy to welcome in people from all walks of life daily. His coworkers and customers consider themselves lucky to have had him around, and his absence is one that will be impossible to fill. The outpouring of love and support from the community shows us he’s left a lasting mark on so many.
He is survived by his wife, Kristie Cholewa; mother-in-law, Elisabeth Cardinali; brothers: Stephen (Gia) and Paul; sister, Jennifer (Joe) Nowicki; niece, Erica (Jonathan) Mercer; brother-in-law, Andrew (Jenelle) Cardinali; nephews: Jordan and Austin Cholewa; nieces: Olivia and Giavanna Cardinali; and great-nephews: Axl Cholewa and Harrison Mercer. Christopher was preceded in death by his mother, Frances; father, Charles; brother, Andrew; nephew, Conner; and his grandparents.
The family will greet guests from 3:00pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday November 4, 2026 at Kaul Funeral Home, 35201 Garfield Rd., Clinton Twp., Michigan.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, November 5 at St. Faustina Catholic Church, 14025 12 Mile Rd., Warren, Michigan. Memorial in state from 10:00am until time of Mass.
