Donald Taylor, devoted and loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Uncle, passed away on August 27, 2024, after a long, fruitful life of 91 years. Don is survived by his loving wife of 65+ years, Joan and his children, Chris (Beth), Janet Hays (Joel), and Dan (Meridith) as well as his grandchildren, Melissa (Rafael), Mitch, Christopher, Jessica (Ryan), Jacob, Luke, and Colt.
Don was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1933 and was adopted soon thereafter by his parents, Rachel and Leonard Taylor. He grew up in Detroit and worked at GE Supply where he met the love of his life, Joan, whom he married in 1959. Don was a devoted husband and partner to Joan for 65+ years and a loving father and grandfather to his 3 children and 7 grandchildren. Don and Joan adopted and raised 3 children together, partnering to create a caring and loving home for their family. Don was a lifelong Michigander who worked faithfully for 43 years at GE Supply and served our country in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was an incredibly skilled handyman who worked on aircraft engines for the Air Force and served as a skilled electrician, plumber, woodworker, mechanic, and builder on the home front. He was hard working and dependable in everything he did and was a true "provider" and dedicated "caregiver" in every sense of the word. When he wasn't working or fixing something on the home front he enjoyed many camping trips or boating with family and friends. He loved sharing a good meal with family and friends and he was a man of many hidden talents who could water ski and dance with the best of them.
Don was a devout and faithful Catholic who demonstrated his faith through his kindness to others and dedication to the care and well being of his family. He was always ready to help others and we are sure he's already helping out in heaven and reconnecting with his friends and family that have passed. We will miss him but we are grateful for being graced with his love and care and we look forward to reuniting with him in heaven.
Thank you to friends and family who have visited, called, and sent prayers and well wishes - the outpouring of love has been very touching and much appreciated. We also want to thank the staff at Genesis Tender Care and Residential Hospice Care for their support during his final days. The memorial mass service will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Warren on Thursday, September 5th, at 10 AM with a lunch reception afterwards hosted nearby. Details to follow at the mass service. Don will be laid to rest in a private service at Great Lakes National Cemetery. In lieu of any flowers, the family asks that any memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity to help others in need.
