Elizabeth Nelson

March 2, 1950 — November 23, 2025

Clinton Township, Michigan

Elizabeth Nelson, known affectionately as Liz, passed away on November 23, 2025, in Troy, Michigan. Born on March 2, 1950, in Memmingen, Germany, Liz's journey to the United States began in her twenties when she arrived aboard the Queen Mary II with her best friend, Ann Lake. Together, they had the noble task of escorting seven orphan children to their adoptive parents in Michigan. What was initially intended as a one-year stay turned into a permanent residence, as both women fell in love with the vibrant culture and opportunities that the United States offered.

Liz was known for her unwavering dedication to hard work and her genuine desire to serve others. She often asked, “What can I do to help?” going above and beyond in supporting her family and community. Family was always paramount in Liz's life; her deep love for her children and grandchildren was evident in all she did. Her generous spirit, kindness, and compassion touched all who knew her. A woman of gratitude, she appreciated the small joys in life and established an uplifting presence around her, never complaining and always speaking kindly of others. Liz's family fondly remembers her as the best mom ever, and her absence will be felt deeply by all who loved her.

A lover of classical music, which resonated with her European roots, Liz found joy in opera and dedicated her time as a volunteer usher at the Opera House in Detroit. Her faith was a cornerstone of her being, as she regularly attended church every Sunday and volunteered at Mt. Hope Church for many years. The connections she formed there enriched her life and led to fond weekend outings on Michigan's picturesque golf courses with friends.

In her leisure, Liz embraced a range of hobbies that brought her joy. She delighted in cross-country skiing, exploring new restaurants, shopping, attending antique shows, and enjoying concerts. Known as a fashionista, she had a keen eye for style, showcasing beautiful clothing and jewelry throughout her life. Even into her nineties, admirers often remarked on how stunning she looked.

She is survived by her loving daughter Susanne Palazzolo and son-in-law Sam Palazzolo; her devoted son Eric Schmidt and daughter-in-law Kelly Schmidt; her grandchildren, Garik Schmidt, along with his wife Gabrielle (Plunkett) Schmidt; Brenton Schmidt, together with his wife Callie (Marotta) Schmidt; Madison Schmidt; and Jordan (Schmidt Nick) Haverland, married to Kolton Haverland, who have a son, George Haverland. Liz also cherished her great-granddaughter Leah Schmidt, whose presence brought her immense joy.

Elizabeth Nelson leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and tireless dedication to family and friends. She will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
