Hugh Jonathon Major, born on July 27, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away on May 3, 2026, in Clinton Township, Michigan. He was a devoted family man and a dedicated provider whose life was marked by his steadfast commitment to those he loved and his quiet strength in caring for his family’s needs.
Hugh's life journey took him through the cities of Detroit, Hazel Park, Danbury in Connecticut, Roseville, and finally Clinton Township, where he spent his later years. His service in the Army is remembered with respect, particularly for his time stationed in Germany. This period imbued him with a sense of discipline and pride that remained with him throughout his life.
Known for his silly sense of humor, Hugh had a warmth and kindness that endeared him to family and friends alike. He took great pride in his role as a caregiver and chauffeur, often driving countless miles to meet the needs of his loved ones who relied on him for support. Beyond his nurturing nature, he was an excellent provider, ensuring that his family was well cared for.
Hugh’s hobbies reflected his varied interests and gentle spirit. He had a deep love for fishing and delighted in computer games, as well as watching television shows and movies about the army and action films. He was an ardent enthusiast of the outdoors, often hunting for deals on groceries and cherishing time spent enjoying simple pleasures like dining at the Hometown Grill in Clinton Township.
His affection for dogs was profound. Over the years, Hugh had four beloved dogs, each a cherished companion, and although none are with us now, he continued to show his boundless love for animals through his “granddog,” Stella, whom he spoiled relentlessly. Notably, he did not share this fondness for cats.
In his youth, Hugh honed skills working on cars and took great satisfaction in passing on this knowledge to the younger generation, including his daughters and granddaughter. He also taught them how to tackle yard work and master the use of tools, leaving a legacy of practical wisdom and self-reliance. He was particularly proud of caring for his mother during her final years in the 1990s, a testament to his caring nature and devotion.
Hugh is survived by his beloved wife, Karen (McGrail) Major, to whom he was married in April 1979 at Sacred Heart Church in Roseville. He also leaves behind two cherished daughters, Heather (Chris Johnston) Major and Candice (Ron Deneweth) Major, as well as one grandchild, Mel Holliday. His extended family includes his sister Deborah (Major) Yerkey and his brother Gregory Major.
The family is planning to lay Hugh to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery; however, details regarding the service and burial have not yet been finalized.
Hugh Jonathon Major’s life was a testament to dedication, love, and quiet strength. His legacy will endure in the hearts of those who knew him best—a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose memory will remain a guiding light for his family forever.
