Hugh Jonathon Major

July 27, 1953 — May 3, 2026

Clinton Township, Michigan

Hugh Jonathon Major, born on July 27, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away on May 3, 2026, in Clinton Township, Michigan. He was a devoted family man and a dedicated provider whose life was marked by a steadfast commitment to those he loved and a quiet strength in caring for his family.

Hugh's life journey took him through Detroit, Hazel Park, Danbury (Connecticut), Roseville, and finally Clinton Township, where he spent his later years. He also served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany, an experience that instilled in him a sense of discipline and pride that remained with him throughout his life.

Professionally, Hugh worked as a systems analyst for several large companies in the Detroit area. He also worked as a mechanic when he was younger and as a cook at Walmart later in life. Whether performing white-collar or blue-collar jobs, Hugh always took pride in doing his work well. He was never too serious, though, and his combination of humor and strong work ethic endeared him to coworkers, some of whom became great friends.

Hugh was an excellent provider, often working overtime and multiple jobs to make sure his family was well cared for. He was also the family chauffeur, driving countless miles to meet the needs of loved ones who relied on him. Even when he was busy, Hugh never turned away someone who needed a favor. He was a good neighbor, a reliable friend, and the type of person others knew they could always count on.

Hugh found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed fishing and boating during his younger years, but as a senior, Hugh preferred indoor activities like playing computer games and watching action films or military-themed TV shows. He absolutely loved hunting for grocery deals, and he enjoyed eating out at local restaurants like the Hometown Grill in Clinton Township. Hugh also had a tremendous love for dogs. Over the years, he had four beloved dogs, each a treasured companion. Although none of his dogs are still with us, Hugh continued to show his love for animals through his “granddog,” Stella, whom he spoiled relentlessly.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Karen (McGrail) Major, whom he married in 1979 at Sacred Heart Church in Roseville. He also leaves behind two daughters, Heather Major (Chris Johnston) and Candice Major (Ron Deneweth), as well as one deeply loved grandchild, Mel Holliday. His extended family includes his sister Deborah (Major) Yerkey and his brother Gregory Major.

Hugh Jonathon Major’s life was a testament to dedication and quiet strength. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose memory will remain a guiding light for his family forever.
