James Troy Root Sr.

April 25, 1941 — August 7, 2025

Sterling Heights, Michigan

On August 7th, we lost our beloved James Troy Root Sr.—a man whose kindness, strength, and unwavering love touched everyone he met. He was a devoted husband to Sharon Root, a proud father to Tammy (John) Swanson, Jim (Lynn) Root Jr., Beth (Craig) Sabo, and Matthew (Melissa)Reed, and a cherished grandfather to Jake, Josh, Kara, Lauren, Troy, Dylan, Gavin, and Rylie.

Born and raised in Lynch and Corbin, Kentucky, James was part of a large and loving family. He was welcomed into his heavenly home by his parents, Archie Root Sr. and Alabam Smith Root, and his siblings: Clifton Root, Edgar Root, Lois Parr, Betty Webb, Melvin Root, Archie Root Jr., Dan Root, Della Staten, Evelyn Burke, MarySusan Fortney, and Amon.

His sweet and caring baby sister Brenda Colley remains the last of this remarkable generation and his dear brother-in-law Bill Webb. His Sister in Laws Denise (Haden) Linington and June Shelton, along with many wonderful nieces and nephews.

James’s family was enormous not only in size but in heart. They grew up together, bound by love, laughter, and resilience. When he was old enough, James hitchhiked to Michigan with his brother Archie during the Second Great Migration, seeking opportunity and a better life. He found both, working as a Pipefitter at Ford Motor Company’s Sterling Axle Plant from 1961 until his retirement in 1998.

He was a man of quiet strength and boundless compassion. James taught us all to love better and to always see the good in others. Even on his hardest days, he found a way to share a smile or make someone laugh. His legacy is one of kindness, humility, and deep love for his family and community.

James will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family deeply appreciates all of your kind thoughts and prayers during this time. A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date. If you wish to send cards or messages of condolence, please address them to:
