John Henry Rabine

John Henry Rabine was born on June 6, 1944, in Highland Park, Michigan, to the late Robert Rabine and Marjorie (Erikson) Kellerher. He passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026, in Detroit.

John attended Chadsey High School in Detroit and completed his education while serving honorably in the United States Navy. During his service aboard the USS Leonard F Mason (DD-852) in Vietnam, he participated in the heroic rescue of the Gemini SC8 astronauts, Neil Armstrong and David Scott, on March 17, 1966, following a critical in-space system failure. As the ship’s photographer, John had the opportunity to capture many memorable images, including that of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

Following his military service, John returned to Detroit, where he pursued a fulfilling career at Hite Photo and Color Detroit until his retirement.

John’s passions included photography, cooking, and fishing with friends. In his later years, he cherished moments spent playing slot machine games with his sisters.

He is survived by his beloved siblings Mary (Cathy) Gallagher, Patricia Radoff, Bernie Rabine, Ginny Hawley, Karen Milner, and Linda Jankowski, as well as his nieces and nephews Krista England, Angela Ray, Shawn Gallagher, Tony Petrey, Jenny Radoff, Khloey Kodaj, Zoey Radoff, Alesia Gallagher, and Erikson Petrey.

John will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on warmly in the hearts of his family and friends.

He will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. Contributions in John’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
