Larry Joseph Gassel, a devoted firefighter whose career spanned four decades, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026, in Detroit, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 16, 1957, in Hamtramck, Michigan, Larry was a man whose life was marked by compassion, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family and community.
Larry’s journey began in Detroit, where he attended Osborn High School, graduating in 1975. Shortly thereafter, his calling led him to join the Detroit Fire Department on August 8, 1977. What started as a profession quickly became a passion, and Larry served with honor and distinction until his retirement on August 8, 2017, achieving the esteemed rank of Battalion Chief. His affection for his firefighting brotherhood was profound, second only to the love he held for his family. Being a firefighter was not merely his job; it was his life’s mission.
Larry was a true family man who treasured time spent with relatives and friends—whether gathered at the firehouse, the deer camp, or in Baltimore. Among his favorite retreats was his beloved cottage on 8 Point Lake near Clare, Michigan, where many cherished memories were made. He found great joy in all sports, especially cheering for the University of Michigan—Go Blue! Never missing a moment, he dedicated countless hours to supporting his sons at soccer practices and games, as well as basketball, track, and lacrosse. Patient and gentle, Larry took pleasure in teaching his boys the art of fishing, always willing to untangle lines and hooks with steadfast care.
Handy and resourceful, Larry often worked extra jobs beyond his firefighting duties—engaging in projects ranging from construction and siding to window washing and heating and cooling. These skills allowed him and his wife, Vicki, to enjoy home and cottage projects together, not only improving their own surroundings but also extending their efforts generously to assist others.
Larry was a compassionate and caring husband, father, brother, and friend. Known as a good listener and confidant, he was a champion of kindness with a soft heart for anyone who was hurting or in need. His courage was evident not only in the firefighting arena but also in his personal battle against cancer, which he fought with the same fearless intensity. Ultimately, he succumbed to the illness but did so peacefully, enveloped in the love of his family.
Larry is survived by his beloved spouse, Vicki (nee Shugart), his partner since their senior year of high school and whom he married on October 19, 1979. Together, they built a remarkable family legacy with their three sons: Thomas (and wife Susanne), Michael (and wife Elizabeth), and Daniel (and wife Taylor). Larry took immense pride in his grandchildren—Joshua and Evelyn, Luke, and Zoey and Cameron—who brought him great joy and happiness.
He is also survived by his siblings: Robert (Nancy), Cathy (Jack) Maynard, John (Carmela), Paul (Carey), and Lori (David) Hill. His extended family includes brother-in-law Alan (Helene) Shugart, numerous beloved nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, one great-great niece, as well as cousins and special cousins, all of whom hold dear the memory of his kindness and warmth.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Norma and Joe Gassel; his in-laws, Bob and Betty Shugart; brother-in-law Art; and niece Anna Boeck.
His life was one of service, love, and devotion—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he has passed from this world, the impact of Larry Joseph Gassel’s courage, kindness, and unwavering spirit will remain forever etched in the hearts of his family, friends, and firefighting community.
