Marvin Pettit, aged 68, passed away on Saturday November 4, 2023 in Roseville, Michigan, after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Laurie, devoted daughter Mary Wever (Brad), and caring son Jeff Pettit (Sarah). Marvin was also blessed with five siblings: Lila Andrews (Terry), Lee Pettit, Carl Pettit, Charlene Andrews (Brian), and Irvin Pettit (Patty). He was preceded in death by his parents Leland and Lila Pettit, as well as his second wife Sandy Prosser Pettit.
Marvin entered this world in Lansing, Michigan in April of 1955. He attended St Johns High School and graduated in 1973. During his time there, he left an indelible mark on the athletic community with his notable achievements in wrestling and football. His exceptional performances even earned him the nickname "Mad Dog". Following his graduation, Marvin served honorably for three years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fulda, Germany where he worked as a Combat Engineer.
After completing his military service, Marvin pursued higher education at Michigan State University. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education before embarking on a career as a Physical Education teacher. Later on, Marvin transitioned into the role of Athletic Director for the Michigan State Prison system; a position he held for 12 years. However, it was teaching Phys Education that truly resonated with him and he returned to this passion. In 2012, he retired from Detroit Public Schools but remained active by teaching Drivers Education in Grosse Pointe and St Clair Shores until mid-September 2023. Affectionately referred to by his students as "Mr P", Marvin became a favorite instructor among teenagers throughout southeast Michigan.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Marvin was a devout Christian and his faith played a central role in his life. He also had a deep love for riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, proudly represented his alma mater as an Michigan State alumni (Go Green!), and cherished moments spent with his beloved family, including his precious grandchildren: Kaleb, Collin, Jake, and Presley. Marvin will be fondly remembered for his adventurous spirit, strong work ethic, inquisitive nature, kind and patient demeanor, sense of humor, and infectious grin. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service celebrating Marvin's life will be held on Sunday November 19, 2023 from 1pm to 3pm at the Union Hall located at 4931 Contec Drive Lansing MI 48910.
