Mary Catherine Courtney

September 9, 1919 — June 7, 2019

Mary Catherine (nee: Ivory) Courtney, age 99, passed away Friday June 7, 2019 at the Lake Orion Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lake Orion, Michigan. Mary was born September 9, 1919 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late David Ivory and the late Margaret (nee: Downey) Ivory. She had four siblings, all deceased: brothers John (Helen), David, Robert Ivory, and sister Margaret (Donald) Cornell. She has a surviving sister in law: Mary Jane (Robert) Ivory. She grew up in Detroit and attended Holy Rosary, Gesu, St. Agnes, and graduated from Girls Catholic Central High School. She then studied and graduated from St. Mary's Commercial College in Detroit.

Mary worked for most of her adult life as an office manager and bookkeeper for various companies, retiring at the age of 76. Mary was highly regarded in her work environment as a very organized, detail oriented, and well spoken woman.

She lived to be 99 3/4 years old and saw many changes in the world. She had the great ability to remain positive and adapt to the many changes the world brought her way during her long life. This character trait carried her through many of life's ups and downs. Mary cherished and loved her family and enjoyed spending as much time with all of them as possible. She was friendly, enjoyed people, and had many good friends through the years.

Mary kept her mind sharp by doing crossword puzzles, reading, and playing bridge. She enjoyed her computer and iPad and used them daily to stay current on the news and to be in contact with family and friends. During her life she loved to travel and was lucky enough to go many places with family and friends. Mary also loved parties and socializing...She was active for many years in the St. Owens church "Singles Again" group. In recent years, she enjoyed the activities at her home parish, Christ Our Light in Troy, and the Troy Senior Center.

Additionally Mary was a sports fan, primarily a big fan of the Detroit Tigers, and the Michigan State Spartans. Over the years, she was an avid golfer, playing with friends and family and also in golf leagues. In later years, it brought great joy for her to live on a golf course, play some, and to watch the golfers from her apartment.

Mary was the loving mother to six children: Mary Courtney (Jeff) Smith, Brian Courtney, Daniel (Julie) Courtney, and Hugh Courtney. Mrs. Courtney was preceded in death by her son David Courtney, daughter Ann Marie Courtney, and Mary's husband, Frank Courtney. Also surviving are her dear grandchildren: Colleen and Kiera Courtney, Kevin (Rowena) Smith, Christopher (Paige Steen) Smith, two great-grandchildren, special niece Kathleen (Ken) Snooks, and godson, Russ Boltz. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Private interment will be in the family plot at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan. Memorial donations in Mary's name appreciated to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, https://cskdetroit.org/
