Mary was the beloved wife of William Hawkins, her partner in life, laughter, and family. Together they built a home filled with love, resilience, and the kind of everyday joy that becomes a legacy. She was also preceded in death by her former husband, Mark Amos, with whom she shared important chapters of her early life and motherhood.
She was the devoted mother of Renee Farley, whose life she enriched with unwavering support and a mother’s fierce, tender love. She was a cherished stepmother of William Hawkins Jr. (Anneliese), Shawn Hawkins (Bethany), and Jaimie Bruha (Kevin). As a grandmother, Mary shined even brighter. She adored Allyssa Laessle (Elliott) and Izzy Farley, celebrating every milestone, every quirk, and every moment she could spend with them.
Mary was a cherished sister to Robert Farley (Robyn), Nancy Bizzotto (Joe), Bruce Farley, and Brian Richards. Their shared memories—holiday traditions, heartfelt conversations, and decades of laughter—were among the treasures she held closest.
Her circle of friendship was deep and enduring. Her best friends—Shelly Martinez, Nancy Bramsch, Gay Orr, Tracey Castro, and her dear friends who preceded her in passing, Patricia Lopedote and Sue Wilczynski—were her chosen family. Together they navigated life’s joys and challenges with loyalty, humor, and a bond that never wavered. There was so much more that could be said about Mary. She made the best chili anyone had ever tasted and a cheesecake that family and friends will never forget. She loved gathering around the table for laughter, stories, and spirited games of pinochle, where her playful competitiveness and joyful spirit always shined through. Mary was one of the most generous and sweetest people anyone could know!
For her children and grandchildren, Mary was more than a mother—she was one of their greatest supporters through every high and low. She was a fighter, a teacher, a survivor, and the kind of parent and grandparent who shaped the people they became. Her presence at life’s milestones—welcoming a new sibling, cheering at graduations, offering encouragement during a first move, and celebrating a wedding—was a gift that will be cherished forever.
As a teacher, Mary touched countless lives. Her students remember her not only for what she taught, but for how she made them feel: capable, important, and seen. Her influence lives on in every person she encouraged, every mind she inspired, and every heart she lifted.
Mary was a blessing to everyone who crossed her path. She had a way of making people feel seen and loved, and she could tell a story like no one else—funny, vivid, and full of heart. Her presence filled a room; her absence leaves a space nothing else can fill.
May 8th became one of the hardest days her family has ever faced. They lost a shining light, the glue that held them together, and the person who made even the toughest days feel survivable. But even in their grief, they hold the belief that she is in a better place—safe, at peace, and still watching over them with the same protective love she carried her whole life.
Mary Lou Hawkins was, simply, loved by all. Her kindness was effortless, her presence comforting, and her spirit bright. Her legacy is one of compassion, connection, and love that will continue to echo through the lives she touched.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
