Maureen Ann Brown, age 88, of Saint Clair Shores, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on February 15, 2026. Born on February 7, 1938, she was the only daughter of the late Albert and Ellen Una (nee: Duggan) Carson. Maureen had three brothers, S. Richard (who preceded her in death), Harry and Thomas. Maureen often joked about her brothers Tom, Dick and Harry. The family resided in Detroit where Maureen attended grade school at Guardian Angels and graduated from Dominican High School. She also attended college at Marygrove. Growing up in this Irish Armenian household included many cultural traditions and colorful characters from both sides of the family.
After marrying her husband, David Brown, they settled in Harper Woods to raise their three children Carolynne, Michael and Jacqueline. Maureen moved from the family home in Harper Woods to Saint Clair Shores in 2016. While Maureen and David divorced in the late 70’s, they remained good friends and close companions, sharing daily conversations, meals out and lots of time with family and friends. They also kept close ties with their old neighbors from Harper Woods to the present date.
Maureen dedicated a significant part of her life to her career as a driver and dispatcher for the City of Harper Woods Dial-A-Ride transportation service. The Dial-A-Ride, later known as SMART Connector, was taken over by Services for Older Citizens of Grosse Pointe and Maureen continued to drive for them into her late 70’s until her position was eliminated. She was recognized for her years of service in an SOC Newsletter article that profiled her career. After that she took a driving position for the City of Fraser Parks and Recreation driving passengers to such locations as Comerica Park, Cranbrook Institute, and the DIA. Maureen continued driving right up until the service was closed down in 2020. She was 82 when she was forced to retire.
Maureen was reunited with her first daughter, Therese Stone, in the late 90’s and felt blessed to enjoy a lasting and loving relationship with Therese, her husband Mark, and their children Erin and Michael.
A lifelong lover of dogs, Maureen was never without a loyal canine companion by her side. Over the course of her driving career in Harper Woods, she rescued many dogs, reuniting some with their owners, and placing or adopting others herself.
Maureen loved flowers and kept a garden that bloomed year round with hydrangeas, roses, hostas, hibiscus, and lots of flower pots with her favorite double petunias, geraniums and snap dragons. Pink and purple blooms were her go-to colors. She had a fondness for bunnies in the garden and had a number of bunny sculptures and figures strategically placed. She was quite particular and selective about those she liked and those she didn’t.
As part of her Armenian heritage, Maureen made baklava at Christmas for many years. This tradition was passed down to her daughters and grandchildren who gathered each year with her before the holidays to make (and eat) baklava, and pack tins to be shared with loved ones.
She was known for her warmth, kindness, and infectious smile, which brightened the lives of those around her. However, it was her family that brought her the greatest joy. She was a devoted mom, and grandmother. Maureen was remarkable for her gentle spirit and her ability to see the good in everyone, bringing joy to the lives of those who knew her. Her innate kindness and sweet disposition was a hallmark of her character, always.
Maureen Brown will be greatly missed and remembered lovingly by her ex-husband David Brown; by her children, Carolynne (Don) Perkins, Michael L. Brown, Jacqueline Brown (Al), and Therese Stone; her grandchildren, Michael A. Brown, Sophia Brown and Catino Cammarata; her brothers Harry and Tom, by her many nieces and nephews to whom she was known as “Aunt Mo”, and by her Cairn terrier, Layla.
A Celebration of Maureen’s extraordinary life will be held in the near future, details to be shared soon.
Maureen Brown’s radiant spirit touched the hearts of many and her gentle, loving presence will be dearly missed by many. She has left us with a legacy of love, laughter, and joy to carry on forever in our memories. Throughout her life, Maureen could be found enjoying her daily coffee. When next you tip a cup of java, please think of Maureen.
