Michael Theodore Matthews

Mike Matthews of Clinton Township, Michigan went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 8, 2025. Born on October 1, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, Mike was the beloved son of Genevieve and Arnold Matthews, who preceded him in death. Mike is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Sandy Matthews; his children, Marcus Matthews (Elizabeth) and Ann Venema (Dan); his cherished grandchildren, Colton, Levi, Faith, and Matthew; his brother, Mark Matthews (Kay) and his awesome friend, Tom. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. His loyalty, faith, and warmth touched countless lives.

A proud graduate of Central Michigan University, Mike earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and political science. He carried his school pride throughout his life and was always quick to share a “Fire Up Chips!” with fellow alumni. 

Mike had a long and fulfilling career as an educator and coach, serving at schools such as Warren Woods Christian and The Boys and Girls Club. He was deeply passionate about mentoring and encouraging youth, both on and off the field – in the classroom, at the gym, and with the PT students at Oakland University.

A lifelong Detroit sports fan, Mike faithfully cheered for the Tigers, Lions, Pistons, and Red Wings, celebrating victories and enduring defeats with unwavering support. An avid golfer, he cherished time spent on the golf course with family and friends, making memories he held close to his heart.

Mike’s faith was the foundation of his life. He loved serving at Crosspointe Christian Church where he volunteered as a greeter and enjoyed Bible studies. Rarely would a Sunday go by without his presence in church, reflecting his deep connection to his Lord and Savior.

Above all, Mike was most proud of his family. He adored his wife, Sandy, and the life they built together. His children, their spouses, and his grandchildren brought him immense joy and were a source of his greatest pride.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Crosspointe Christian Church, located at 21336 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike’s honor can be made to Crosspointe Christian Church, Parkinson’s Foundation (Parkinson.org), or a place of your choosing that serves the less fortunate. Mike was an advocate of helping others and donating would make him smile.

Mike will be remembered for his boundless love, unwavering faith, and the lasting legacy of kindness and joy that he leaves behind.
