Richard Florian Szkody

March 8, 1939 — February 27, 2025

Sterling Heights, Michigan

Richard (Dick) Florian Szkody passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, at the age of 85, with his family surrounding him and his partner and best friend, Sybil (Isabella) by his side. Born in Detroit, Michigan on March 8, 1939, to the late Irene and Florian Szkodzinski, Dick was the eldest brother in his family. He is survived by his cherished partner, Sybil (Isabella Dodge); his daughters, Amy (Steve) Bandalos and Noelle Szkody; and his sister, Karen (Gordon) Wesley. He is predeceased by his brother Bill (Kathy) Szkodzinski. In addition, he is survived by cousins, many nieces and nephews, and friends who have lost a loved one in him.

Dick’s absence will also be felt within his extended family, whom he loved. He will be dearly missed by Sybil’s children, Robin (Dave) Ramsey, Reed Dodge, and her grandchildren: Katie, Alex, and Brandon Surhigh (Robin Ramsey) who knew him as “Uncle Dick."

Dick grew up closely connected with his family and cousins. He was a guard on his school football team and a Veteran of the Army, all of which he loved to share fond memories of. He called Michigan his home and enjoyed his career as a plumbing sales rep traveling extensively and in later years as a staffing account manager. Dick was a proud, loving father and enjoyed his daughters’ accomplishments. He and Sybil made their home in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Dick loved live music and he and Sybil could often be found enjoying local bands, dancing the night away with friends, or planning their next trip back to Benidorm, Spain.

Dick loved life, telling a good joke, and was an eternal optimist. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends but not forgotten. A celebration of his life is currently being planned. Please share memories with the family at their online guestbook.
