Susan Carol Matthews

Susan (Sue) Carol Matthews, age 83, of Macomb, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026.

Sue was born on March 17, 1943, to Arnold and Elizabeth (Piasecki) Bengtson in Marquette, Michigan. She graduated from Graveraet High School in Marquette in 1961.

On August 19, 1961, Sue married the love of her life, David (Dave) A. Matthews. Together, they began their life and family in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, before purchasing their first home in Warren. Sue and Dave later moved to Macomb where they enjoyed their retirement years together. Sue devoted herself to being a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. Their 64 years of marriage were filled with love, family, friendship, and countless cherished memories.

Sue had a generous heart and a strong commitment to her community. For many years, she volunteered as a candy striper at South Macomb Hospital in Warren. She was also a devoted Cub Scout den mother for both of her sons. After her children were grown, Sue began a 20-year career as a receptionist at the Keith Merten State Farm Agency. Her warm and caring personality allowed her to form many lifelong friendships. She especially cherished gathering frequently for lunch to share laughter and good conversation with them. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society, where she loved styling her elaborate and colorful outfits, the camaraderie, and going on many adventures.

An avid reader, Sue passed her love of reading on to her grandchildren. She loved to travel, especially to Hawaii, where she and Dave spent many winters together. She treasured weekend shopping trips with her daughter, playing cards and board games, attending concerts in the park, and, most of all, spending time surrounded by her family and friends.

Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David (Dave) A. Matthews, who passed away on February 12, 2026.

She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her children, David (Marsha) Matthews Jr., Jon (Holly) Matthews, and Melody Sienkowski (Paul Cueny); grandchildren, Justin (Kristiena) Olechiw, Leanne (Darrell) Jones, Charles (Alayna) Matthews, Matthew (Kaitlin) Sienkowski, Kristi (Jami) Boyce, Madison (Aaron) Saylor, Jeffrey (Shirley) Cueny, and Rita Kleehammer; great-grandchildren, Amira, Emma, Arabella, Adrian, Julian, Connor, Atalia, Daniel, and Camila; sister Christine (Steven) Hughes; sister-in-law Germaine Matthews; niece Cathy Kiser; and nephew Scott Hughes.

Sue will be remembered for her kind spirit, her devotion to her family, her wonderful sense of fun, and the many friendships she made throughout her life. Her legacy of love will live on through her family and friends.

A Mass will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, 48115 Schoenherr Rd., Shelby Township, MI 48315. In-state visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., with Mass following at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held immediately afterward.
