Ms. Susie Mae McLaughlin was born on June 28, 1949, in Louisville (Winston County), Mississippi to Willie Odell Mitchell and Tommie Lester Craig. Mom was born in her grandparent's home, Henry and Lenora Lowery. Mom transitioned to be with the Lord on September 17, 2021, at the age of 72.
Our mother accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. Her passions included sharing the love of God through Jesus Christ with others, gardening, collecting angels, singing, and watching her grandchildren grow. She graduated from Rosenwald High School in Osceola, Arkansas with a full scholarship in music. Due to financial difficulties at that time, she was unable to accept her scholarship to become a nurse. To our mother, education was extremely important.
She relocated to Davenport, Iowa in 1978. While living there, mom worked tirelessly to care for her children. She was employed at Iowa East Central T.R.A.I.N, helping to provide resources to low-income individuals. Our mother left T.R.A.I.N to be an advocate at Safer Foundation. Her mission was to help any convicted felon receive their education and secure future employment. Mom became a Certified Nurse's Assistant and Medical Technician. With college now within her reach, she completed some college courses at Scott Community College. Mom was also a Para-Educator at Wood Intermediate School and worked part time as a cashier at Dollar General.
While living in Davenport, Iowa our mother, children, and family received spiritual guidance, prayers, and support from Pastor Stanly Moore (Progressive Baptist Church), Reverend Emmett Wiseman (former Pastor) and Pastor Faye Scott (Ambassadors for Christ in Waterloo, Iowa). We are eternally grateful.
Throughout her journey, our mother accomplished all of this while raising 5 children and providing additional resources and spiritual guidance to families in need. It was time for Mom to officially retire from working, so with much prayer, in 2014 she decided to relocate to Mt. Clemens, Michigan to be closer to her daughter and family.
While living in Michigan, our mother became a member of Rock Church International in Detroit, Michigan, with Senior Pastor Dr. Terry Caldwell for 6 years. With Mom's infectious smile, witty sense of humor, generosity, and kindness, she boldly shared God's love through Jesus Christ with everyone around her. Our mother was simply "One in a Million". She was our strong matriarch and we loved her and always will. We are only crying tears of joy because Mom is with Jesus now, Hallelujah, where she hopes all of us will be one day.
"Do not grieve, the joy of the Lord is your strength."
