Wesley Arthur Smith, Sr., 94, died February 16, 2023 in his home in Shelby Township, Michigan. He was born March 31, 1928 in Utica, Michigan to the late Leon and Mary (Curtis) Smith.
Wesley had a long career serving his country, which began when he enlisted into the US Army during WWII at the age of 17. He was called back into active service in 1950 to serve in the Korean War, during which time he was awarded three Bronze Service Stars. After the war he returned to work as an Army civilian employee, until he was again called upon to serve his country. During the Vietnam War, Wesley volunteered for overseas deployment where he supported ongoing United States Military operations for five years. He continued working for the Army until his retirement. Wesley was also a member of The American Legion for over 50 years.
Wesley was a soldier and patriot until the very endâ fiercely proud of his military service and a staunch defender of his beloved country. He loved the American flag and everything for which it stands. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a man of strength and character. Wesley was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He also had a passion and prowess for golf. At least four days a week he could be found on a golf course trying for another hole-in-one. When he wasn't golfing he loved to play cards and bingo but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Wesley was a loving father of five children, all of whom survive him; Wesley Arthur (Kelly) Smith, Jr. of Shelby Township, Ann (Dave) Bailey of Shelby Township, Linda (Kyle) May of Sterling Heights, Mary (Michael) Roy of Imlay City, and Paul Smith of Walhalla, SC. He is also survived by his brothers Larry Smith of Shelby Township, and Kenny (Merion) Smith of Shelby Township; as well as 11 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father, Leon J. Smith; mother, Mary Ellen Smith; loving wife, Edith Jean Smith, to whom he was married for 23 years; the mother of his children Dorothy Smith (Barnes); 11 of his siblings; and his grandson, Adam Edmund Wojciechowski.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at the American Legion, 46146 Cass Ave, Utica, Michigan.
