William Joseph Andrew

William J. Andrew, a cherished husband, devoted father, beloved grandfather, and esteemed veteran, passed away peacefully at home on August 28, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on February 25, 1945, in Detroit, MI, William's life was a testament to resilience, dedication, and love. 

The son of Alvin and Marion Andrew, William was a proud graduate of Aero Mechanical High School in 1963. He pursued an associate degree in Industrial Supervision and Management, which laid the foundation for his remarkable 36-year career as a manufacturing engineer at Chrysler. Deeply patriotic, William enlisted in the Army in 1969, serving bravely as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, where he was wounded in action. His exemplary service earned him numerous decorations and a respected position in the Michigan National Guard, from which he retired honorably in 1995. William's passion for service extended beyond his military career. He was an active member of the Veterans of the Vietnam War, participated in the Vietnam History Project at the Library of Congress, and was affiliated with the Society of Manufactured Engineers, the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot Association, and the Army Aviation Association. His contributions to these organizations were a reflection of his enduring commitment to his country and his comrades. 

A man of varied interests, William was an avid car enthusiast who joyfully restored classic cars and participated in local auto clubs. His love for Harley Davidson motorcycles and tractors was well-known, as he spent countless hours tinkering and fixing them up over the years. Together with his beloved wife Maria, he explored the United States in their motorhome, cherishing the open road and the warmth of a campfire. William's love for flying extended beyond his military service, as he was working towards obtaining a private aircraft license. Those who had the privilege of knowing William will remember him for his easygoing and positive demeanor. He was a friendly face and a warm heart, whose presence brought joy to everyone around him. William was predeceased by his parents Alvin and Marion Andrew and his brother, Gilbert Macfarland. 

He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Maria, his daughter Susan and her husband Don, his son Michael and his wife Anna, and his cherished grandchildren, Ian and Julia. He also leaves behind his sister, Janet Andrew. 

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Accentcare Hospice for their compassionate care during William's final days. They would also like to encourage donations in his memory- The American Cancer Society. William J. Andrew will forever remain in our hearts, a beacon of love, courage, and kindness. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
